Development Manager / Head of Development

Salary: £55-60k depending on experience.

Haymarket Business Interactive (HBi) is the in-house web development department within Haymarket Business Media. We have a great opportunity to join this focal team within a major, market-leading media company with a current portfolio of 30+ websites and other business-critical applications.

HBi are adopters of the Scrum methodology and we operate in an agency style, combining the fast pace and variety of a digital agency with the team spirit and ‘ownership’ of client work. We are now seeking an experienced Web Development Manager.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Digital Technology Director, this is a key role requiring a mix of commercial, man-management and technical experience. The Web Development Manager will lead a 15 strong development team comprising client-side, server-side and SQL developers. This is primarily NOT a hands-on programming role.

Structure

·         Reporting to the Digital Technology Director.

·         Working alongside the Design and UI Manager and the Project Delivery Manager.

·         Direct line management of the Development Team - 9 server-side, 5 client-side and a SQL developer.

·         Close working relationships with Publishers and the head of internet operations (infrastructure).

Responsibilities

·         Accountable for delivery of programs of work assigned to Development team.

·         Ensure that brand-lead projects integrate with the overall architecture and strategy.

·         Responsible for the overall quality of development and compliance with company standards.

·         Responsibility for work planning including the production of regular project status reports tailored to the target audience.

·         Line management including performance management, associate development and feedback, talent.

Experience

·         A background in application development, architecture and technical project management with a proven ability to deliver high-quality software.

·         At least 5 years as a Senior Developer.

·         Experience of directly managing budgets and hiring of new staff.

·         Proven leadership experience with an ability to motivate, mentor and appraise with exceptional organizational skills and ability to structure teams and processes.

·         Experience of external resource management including the hiring and managing of contractors and external agencies including all contractual arrangements.

·         Experience of ad serving technologies, SEO, analytics technologies and email marketing systems would be an advantage.

·         Ability to present to senior audiences.

Skills and Qualifications

·         At least a 2:1 degree in computing or similar.

·         Expert in two or more major OO programming languages.

·         A good understanding of the technologies we use (primarily Coldfusion, C#, ASP.net and MSSQL but also some java as well as all major client-side technologies such as html/xhtml, css and JavaScript and RIA technologies such as Flex, Flash and Ajax.

·         Major, hands-on experience of any of the following – Agile, Scrum, RUP, XP.
